Our first getaway as a family of five was messy, magical, and everything I didn’t know we needed.
Going on our first trip as a family of 4 + 1 (because of course we had to bring Grandma!) felt like a big deal.
I was excited. But also nervous.
Okay… overwhelmed is the more accurate word.
I’ve always been a last-minute packer. Like, throw-random-things-in-a-bag-and-hope-it-works-out type of girl. When it was just me, that chaotic energy somehow worked. But now, I’ve got 2.5 extra humans to worry about (yes, I’m counting my husband as the .5—no shade, just facts).
Packing for four people including two small kids who need everything from backup clothes to snacks to loveys to random dinosaur toys “just in case” was a full production. I tried to be as thorough as possible, and yeah, I may have overpacked slightly, but honestly? You can’t be too prepared when toddlers are involved.
We were headed to Great Wolf Lodge, an indoor water park we had never been to before. I had no clue what to expect. I just knew I wanted the kids to have a blast and make some core memories. But also… let’s be real: my husband and I used to book hotels as a way to escape, relax, and do nothing. So this new kind of trip where the goal is chaos, fun, and very little rest was definitely an adjustment for both of us.
By the time we finally hit the road (a full two hours behind schedule), I had officially entered my “go with the flow” mama mode. Flexibility is a superpower when you have two kids. Things will never go perfectly, so I don’t even try to force it anymore. I just adjust, breathe, and roll with whatever happens.
And you know what? It. Was. Worth. It.
From the moment we walked into the lodge, the kids were lit up with excitement. The water slides, the splash zones, the little surprises throughout the day, it was pure joy watching them soak it all in. And even though it wasn’t our usual relaxing getaway, it brought us something better: connection. Laughter. Memories.
We laughed. We ate too many snacks. We stayed up past bedtime. We let go of routines. And I even caught my husband smiling at the chaos like, “Okay, this is kind of amazing.”
So if you’re a mama staring at a pile of laundry, unsure if booking a trip is worth the stress… let me be the voice that says: Yes. Do it! Book the trip.
Even if you overpack…
Even if you run behind schedule…
Even if it feels overwhelming…
Because sometimes the imperfect trips make for the perfect memories.
Our trip turned out to be a total success. We all loved it and will definitely be booking another stay for Christmas.
Because once isn’t enough.
